Shallow plates or bowls that can hold an inch or two of water
Sticks or skewers
Cut a length of yarn roughly twelve inches long for each participant.
Tie the yarn to one end of a stick or skewer to create an ice fishing pole for each birthday party guest. If using a skewer, you may want to snip off the sharp pointy tip to avoid anyone getting injured.
Set a plate or bowl out for each guest.
Put an inch or so of cold water into each plate or bowl. The water should be deep enough so the ice cubes can float.
Place five to eight or so ice cubes into each plate of water.
Instruct the participants to lay their yarn across the top of as many ice cubes as possible.
Sprinkle salt on the participants’ ice cubes where the yarn is touching and instruct the guests to watch as the ice melts and then refreezes.
Now, instruct the birthday party guests to gently raise their fishing poles and see how many ice cubes they can catch.
